Our Refuge

MonkeyOur refuge is open during the summer from 20 of June till the end of September. We have 3 dormitory and 55 beds in total. The winter shelter has 4 beds.
The kitchen is offering simple and traditional home made meals. Our hut is one of a few you can reach only by foot, so we use a helicopter to provide it with food.
With regard to the water supply there is a spring witch flows into a small lake at the foot of the Croda dei Toni mountain called Lago Nero.

The hut is situated in the very middle of the grand and wild Croda dei Toni bastion and mount Giralba di Sopra rock circle. The great view from this astonish terrace is including Croda di Lognoto, Crissi, Biviera and Cridola massifs far away till the Monfalconi. And if you go to the Giralba pass nearby, you can enjoy another amazing view of Crode Fiscaline, Cima Undici, Popera and the head of Alta Val Fiscalina valley.

Our history

The stonework of the refuge dates back up to 1908 when the Cadorina department of CAI (Italian Alpine Club) has decided to transform the old shepherd’s shelter into a small mountain hut. The modest structure was consisting in two rooms at the ground floor: the first one open to the public and the other one used as kitchen and dining room. At the upper floor there were six beds. The hut was dedicated to the poet Giosuè Carducci not because he was a gifted mountaineer but because a few years ago he visited two times Cadore and during his last visit in Misurina he composed the “Cadore” ode, praising the beauty of Comelico and of entire Cadore. The hut, situated at 400m from Giralba’s pass was however invisible for the artillery and during the WWI it has suffered some damages but it was not completely destroyed.

There was an arrival station of a cableway coming from the bottom of the Auronzo valley and it was the supply line for the troops at the front. The position on Giralba’s pass of the Italians at the front line was dominant and the combat zone was moved in Fiscalina valley where the everyday skirmishes between the Alpines and the Kaiserjagers were held for the conquest of some jutting stones, high crests, mountain faces and untouched summits. From Giralba pass towards Paterno and Cima Undici mounts, you can still visit the trenches, the caves, the galleries with watches, ledges dig in the rock, remains of camps and barbed wire. During the 50’s the structure was reinforced and the kitchen was rearranged but only in 1962 Cadorina di Auronzo Department has planned the enlargement of the hut. The new hut, completely renewed, was giving hospitality to about thirty alpines and the refreshment was suitable to the future development of tourism in the Dolomiti. In the 80’s the dining room and the bathrooms were modernized and enlarged and in 2002 the hut was provided with new bathrooms and a hot shower at north. In 2005 started the project conceived by the head quarter of CAI to put solar panels, wind turbine and a motor-generator on vegetable oil in order to reduce the pollution and to have electricity during the day.
